Deregulated Residential & Commercial Electricity

Deregulation offers you the freedom to choose the supplier of your electricity needs. You can switch to an energy supplier – also known as the ‘Electric Generation Supplier (EGS)’ – that offers a favorable electricity price for a specific period.

Pennsylvania was one of the first states to encourage competition between energy companies. In 1996, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed the Electricity Generation Customer Choice and Competition Act into law, which gave the people of Pennsylvania the right to choose a supplier of their choice for their electric needs. Around this same time, UGI Corporation, who’d already been in the energy industry since the 1800’s, began working in the Energy Choice business too.

This deregulation of electricity provides consumers with more choices and creates competition among suppliers to keep costs down. The purpose of deregulated electricity is to lower prices and increase customer satisfaction by introducing competition into the marketplace. 

What does Electric Deregulation Mean to You?

Deregulation is a term that describes the way electricity, the commodity, is sold to the consumers. Without deregulation, the utilities would have control over the whole process, from generation to commodity, including customer service. With deregulation, the power choice shifts to the consumer.

Most homeowners and small businesses in deregulated states have the option to switch suppliers. Electric customers in these states are becoming more aware of these new choices available to them and are becoming more inclined to make the switch.

What Pricing Options are Offered by Deregulated Electricity Suppliers?

Most electricity offers are either a fixed pricing option or an indexed (variable) pricing option. Fixed pricing is an excellent option for customers who must meet specific budget criteria with a constant price for a specific period, as it lets you lock in your rates for a specified length of time. Indexed pricing (also known as variable pricing) is suitable for customers who are able to accept some level of risk associated with market prices, to receive what are generally lower rates.

You can expect excellent service and reliability when you make UGI EnergyLink your electricity supplier. UGI EnergyLink is a member of PJM, the entity governing electric generation and transmission in most of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. All of our deliveries are coordinated through the PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Does UGI EnergyLink Offer Residential and Commercial Electricity Service? 

As the result of electric deregulation, residential, commercial and industrial customers can now switch to an alternative electric supplier in an effort to manage the generation and transmission costs on their electricity bills. UGI EnergyLink offers commercial electric service. At this time, we do not offer residential electric service.
