With the discovery of abundant natural gas deposits in the US, the supply has never been better. This rising supply has led to falling prices and greater consumption, which means it’s never been a better time to switch to natural gas as your home’s go-to energy source. Need more reasons to switch? Consider this.

Natural Gas is Consistent and Convenient

Unlike propane and heating oil, natural gas doesn’t need to be stored in a tank. Natural gas runs through underground pipelines that are connected to your home, which means you’ll never run out of gas when you need it the most.

Natural Gas is Cost Effective

While rates for all energy types see peaks and valleys, one source of energy is consistently cheaper than the rest – natural gas. It can be difficult to compare prices between energy sources, but comparing natural gas to propane is an apples-to-apples comparison because of BTU. For example, if the cost for natural gas is $10 per 1,000 cubic feet, then $10 will purchase roughly one million BTUs of energy. This is equivalent to 11.26 gallons of propane. At $2.50 per gallon of propane, it would cost $28.15 for 11.26 gallons of propane.

Natural Gas is Versatile

Natural gas isn’t just for heating your home; it can be used for water heaters, home appliances, outdoor grills, and pool heaters. The versatility of natural gas, combined with its low prices and generally cleaner burn than other gases or oils, make natural gas hard to beat.

Natural Gas is Safe

Propane gas is heavier than air, which means it tends to linger if there is a leak. This can be very dangerous in your home especially around open flames on propane-powered ranges. Natural gas is lighter than air, so it’s generally considered safer because it dissipates into the air faster than propane. This helps to reduce the chance of dangerous situations in your home.

Natural Gas is Domestic

Over 90 percent of the natural gas used in the United States is produced on domestic soil. More specifically, one of the largest shale formations of natural gas found in the US happens to be partially under Pennsylvania, known as the Marcellus Shale. The US Department of Energy also estimates that there is enough natural gas under American soil to last us at least another 60 years.
