Turns out our ancestors were already tackling a challenge we still face every summer: keeping cool without running up the energy bill.
Before thermostats, central air, and electric fans, people built and lived in homes that worked with the environment instead. The result? Houses that stayed remarkably comfortable, even in the peak of summer heat.

Building with the Sun in Mind
Early American builders didn’t have energy bills, but they constantly thought about the sun. Homes were deliberately oriented so that the longest sides of the house faced north and south, minimizing direct sun exposure on the walls during the hottest parts of the day. Large trees were planted strategically on the east and west sides of the house to block the low morning and afternoon sun.
Today, if you have mature trees on your property, you essentially have free cooling. Make sure you’re not cutting them back more than necessary. If your yard is sparse, even a few well-placed shade trees or tall shrubs along west-facing walls can reduce the amount of heat your home absorbs on a summer afternoon.
A Front Porch Is for More Than Rocking Chairs
The American front porch is just about as iconic as the white picket fence, but it was also a piece of smart engineering. Deep covered overhangs and wraparound porches shade the walls and windows of a home before direct sunlight ever has a chance to heat them. This passive shading kept interior temperatures lower.
If you don’t have a porch, exterior window shades, awnings, and solar screens do the same job today. Keeping blinds and curtains closed on south- and west-facing windows during afternoons can also reduce indoor temperatures.
High Ceilings and Thick Walls
Walk through a colonial-era home, and you’ll notice two things right away: the ceilings are tall, and the walls are thick. Neither was accidental. Hot air rises, so high ceilings keep the living space cooler by pushing warm air up and away from the people in the room. Thick masonry walls made of brick or stone absorb heat during the day and release it gradually at night, acting as a natural thermal buffer.
If your home has brick or stone elements, they’re helping to regulate your interior temperature without you noticing. And ceiling fans, set to run counterclockwise in summer, mimic the high-ceiling effect by pushing warm air up and circulating cooler air down.
The Power of Natural Airflow
Before air conditioning, cross-ventilation was one of the most effective ways to cool your home during summer while also improving indoor air quality. Windows and doors in early American homes are positioned on opposite sides of rooms so that a breeze moving through one opening would pull air out the other, creating a natural flow.
They also use sleeping porches, screened outdoor spaces attached to the upper floors of a home. These are typically seen in warmer regions, specifically because nighttime air movement makes sleep comfortable without any mechanical cooling.
You can recreate this today by opening windows on opposite sides of your home in the early morning and evening, when the outdoor air is cooler than the indoor air. A box fan in one window pushing air out, combined with open windows on the opposite side, creates the same cross-ventilation effect that colonial builders designed into their floor plans.
Shutting the House Down at Noon
Perhaps the most underrated habit of pre-AC America is that people closed their homes during the hottest part of the day. Shutters were latched, doors were shut, and the house was essentially sealed from roughly late morning through late afternoon. Then, as evening temperatures dropped, everything was opened back up to flush out the accumulated heat.
Your home today is most efficient at staying cool when it’s sealed during peak-heat hours and ventilated during cooler hours. Opening and closing windows and doors in tune with nature will help your home stay cool without cranking the thermostat.
Old Habits, New Savings
Sometimes the best way to cool your home during summer doesn’t require a smart thermostat or a new AC unit. These ideas are the kind of low-effort, high-impact habits that American homeowners figured out over the past 250 years, and that were largely forgotten when central air made it easy not to think about it.
