Today, as a result of electricity deregulation, business owners throughout much of the northeast can choose where they buy their electricity. By shifting to a commercial electric provider, businesses can buy their energy from a supplier other than the local distribution company in the area. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has prepared a detailed map that outlines electricity deregulation by state. Business owners in these states can shop around for the best price on their electricity service.

2014 Electricity Rates for Small Businesses

The average retail price of electricity for commercial customers in the Northeast was 14.63 cents per kWh in Feb. 2014, according to the EIA. A typical business may consume about 5,000 kWh per month, which would bring their monthly energy bill to about $731. For these businesses, saving just a few pennies on the amount paid per kilowatt hour can make a real impact on the company’s bottom line.

If these businesses were able to save just two cents more per kWh, for example, their monthly energy bill would have fallen from approximately $731 to $631—a reduction of about $100 a month or $1,200 annually. This should give you a general idea of the savings opportunity so easily available for electricity plans to your Northeast business.

Business Electricity Plans Offered by UGI EnergyLink

As a result of electricity deregulation, UGI EnergyLink can offer businesses throughout the Northeast in deregulated markets (including PA, MD, DC, DE, NY, and NJ) two pricing plans: a fixed pricing option and an indexed pricing option.

Fixed Pricing Business Electricity Plan

Fixed pricing is an excellent option for businesses that must meet specific budget criteria with a constant price for the entire period. By making UGI EnergyLink their electric provider, businesses have the option to lock in a low fixed rate on electricity. This is especially beneficial for small businesses that must strictly plan and coordinate its budget.

Indexed Pricing Business Electricity Plan

An indexed pricing business electricity plan is a great choice for businesses that are able and equipped to accept some level of risk by taking advantage of market pricing. Wholesale market conditions will dictate whether rates go up or down. This pricing option may be appropriate for larger, well-established businesses that are able to accept a level of risk while enjoying access to potentially lower rates on commercial electricity services.
